Description

The Internal Measurement Unit (IMU) is designed to sit beneath the centre of the shipboard heliport, to provide highly accurate pitch, roll and heave measurements to the Heliport Monitoring System (HMS).  Due to the large temperature range, light weight and compact housing, the unit can be installed almost anywhere.

On some aviation-capable vessels, where the heliport is a significant distance from the vessel’s other IMU sensors, complex offset calculations need to be performed to work out the pitch, roll & heave being experienced at the heliport.  Having a dedicated IMU directly beneath the heliport removes the need for such calculations as the HMS will receive a direct feed from the heliport’s IMU.  This direct feed enables accurate measurements to be taken, which will be displayed on the HMS screen(s), to facilitate safer helicopter operations onboard.
